Danda-Kharka Project – Nepal 2016

The Danda-Kharka are looking to rebuild the Primary School that was destroyed by the earthquake in 2015 and give the children a learning environment and an opportunity to secure a sustainable future that we all take for granted.

In January 2015, a team of twelve volunteers from Jersey worked in Dandakharka, Nepal to help provide clean water for every house in village.  This was a community Work Project organised by Jersey Overseas Aid, which runs similar voluntary missions in different countries ever year.  Danda-Kharka have resolved to raise funds to help with the rebuilding and some work has already been funded.  When Danda-Kharka asked the villagers, what was their next most important need, they were told it was the school.

The primary school in Dandakharka served seventy children who, since the earthquake, have been taught in temporary classrooms with no windows, heating or electricity and little in the way of learning aids.

Plenty of Green Fingers at Samares School

Julia Chapman 29 September 2016 Category: Charity

Samarès School was a hive of activity recently as the staff of Altair helped prepare the ground for the school’s kitchen garden project in preparation for the winter months ahead.

Over the summer holidays the garden had become very overgrown, so Altair staff donned their gardening gloves and volunteered to weed the raised beds and surrounding areas, cutting back bushes, laying a new path to the pond and generally give a helping hand so the garden was ready for the children to plant their winter crop.

The school children had sown seeds earlier on in the year and maintained the garden (and the chickens!) and were rewarded with an excellent crop of vegetables, including carrots, spring onions, tomatoes and 21lbs of potatoes which they were able to sell at their school summer fête.

The garden project is part of the Caring Cooks Jersey incentive that launched the Jamie Oliver Kitchen Garden Project early in 2016 which also supports two other local schools, encouraging school childre…

Board effectiveness reviews - the key to good corporate governance

Nick Watkins 30 June 2016 Category: Articles

“Every company should be headed by an effective board which is collectively responsible for the long-term success of the company”*.   The key word here is “effective”.  But what does this mean in practice, and what steps need to be taken in order to achieve an effective board and to ensure each individual director plays their part?

The primary responsibility of the board of directors is to provide leadership to the company with the objective of creating long-term stakeholder value.   The practical way that the board performs this task day-to-day is by exercising its function to make decisions on behalf of the company and by ensuring subsequent implementation of such decisions via board oversight of executive management, and the company’s external agents and delegates.

Whilst a robust oversight and risk management framework is clearly critical to good corporate governance, the effectiveness of the process by which a board considers and makes decis…
